Abstract
Modern societies need quality education nowadays. The capacity of an educational enterprise to provide relevant learning experiences for learners in the dynamic and ever-changing world has driven schools to become responsive since 21st Century education demands for better preparation of learners in basic education to be equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes.
The efforts and synergy to make schools a potential place for every learner is a challenge for all school administrators and teachers today. The school must have an internal environment consisting of its physical set-up, management, quality of teachers, effective teaching methods, positive social and learning conditions, and strong home-school link. Teachers play a vital role in attaining excellent school performance. They are trained professionals with knowledge and skills, as well as level of competencies in the task of teaching and remolding the children under their care. The Department of Education categorizes classroom teachers into two: teachers without ancillary functions and teachers with ancillary functions.
The study aimed to determine the workload and performance of selected elementary schools in Caloocan City. There were four schools included in this study namely A. Mabini, MH Del Pilar, Tala, and Manuel L. Quezon. There were 70 respondents from the different schools which comprised of School Heads, Master Teachers, and Grade Level Chairmen.
The profile of the school respondents as to number of enrollees, number of teachers, and number of classrooms revealed that in terms of enrolment, some of the schools had the same percentage. On the other hand, the number of teachers and classroom varied.
Workload was assessed in terms of ancillary works such as feeding teacher, canteen teacher, registrar, property custodian, librarian and subject coordinator. The respondents assessed high in majority of the indicators and over-all weighted mean, which implied that teachers handling ancillary duties do their best on the work they are assigned to.
In terms of the school performance for the last three years, the respondents assessed the last three consecutive years using IPCRF for teachers performance, performance-based bonus and awards received by the school. It indicated that the three consecutive years show positive results in these three aspects of school performance.
There is no significant relationship between the workload represented by ancillary works and school performance except for awards of the school and workload policy. Schools have more opportunities in winning in different contest if the teachers' workload is still manageable.
Recommendations that are formulated for this study are as follow: Encourage the parents to send their children to school. Department of Education should employ more teachers to lessen workload, provide additional classrooms to educate more children, school administrators should conform to the guidelines of allocating teaching loads, and implement the proposed changes to workload policy.
