Abstract
The sports and education are portly with studies about what factors that influence the elementary student-athlete choice decision and the effect of their academic performance. The purpose of this study is to explore the student-athlete and their academic performance as basis for sports program. The researcher examined a number of academic factors, participation in intensive training, class participation and preparation, perception of academic experiences and identification as student-athletes. The data gathered from the survey that was administered from a selected elementary student athletes and coaches in Caloocan north I district. The result suggests that there were significant differences between the groups in several of the domains measured. For example, the finding suggest that student-athlete who identify as athlete first and students second think less about academics have lower grades meaning lower academic performance, are less likely to be involved in other extracurricular activities, are less likely to participate in classes, and are less willing to sacrifice on athletic activities participation for academics. Implications and suggestions on how to improve the academic performance of the student-athlete were discussed in the study.
