Abstract
This study aimed to identify the factors which
influence Mathematics achievement of first year students
at Kabukiran 1, Kalookan City. It aimed to find out which of these factors can predict students achievement. More specifically, it sought answers to the following questions: 1. What is the level of achievement in Mathematics
of first year students in Kabukiran I?
2. Which of the following home-factors affect the mathematics achievement of the students?
a. Parents' educational attainment
b. Parents occupation
c. Parents monthly income
d. Number of children in the family
e. Family's ethnic origin
A total of four hundred (400) sophomores enrolled
in Camarin High School, Bagong Silang High School and C.
Zamora High School/CHS Annex during the school year
1994-1995 were selected by systematic random sampling.
The samples constituted 12.30 percent of the total population of the three (3) schools. The data were obtained from the DECS Form 18 filed
in the office of the principal/registrar.
The instruments used in this study were survey forms. Samples of these were marked Appendices A & B. These Instruments were administered to the subjects with the assistance of the mathematics coordinators of each school.
This study revealed the following findings: 2.1 The level of achievement of the first year
students in mathematics is low. 2.2 With regards to the home-factors listed, the following were significant to the students' achievement.
a. Fathers' occupation and monthly income
b. Mothers' monthly Income
c. Number of children in the family
The mothers' occupation and the educational attainment, ethnic origin of their families and the occupation of the other members of the family who were earning as well as their monthly income were not related to the students' achievement.
The educational attainment of the fathers was significantly related to the students achievement.
2.3 The following teacher-factors were significantly and highly related with the students' achievement:
a. Teacher's age
b. Number of years experience in teaching Mathematics
c. Educational attainment
d. Number of subject preparation
e. Class size
f. Ethnic origin
& Number of seminars/in-service trainings attended
2.4 The students achievement and all the
instructional materials, devices and school facilities listed and tested through chi-square test, were significantly related.
3. Which of the following teacher-factors affect the achievement of the students in mathematics?

c. In-service trainings/seminars (related in Math) attended
d. Number of subject preparation
