Abstract
An achievement test is a test of developed skill or knowledge. The most common type of achievement test is a standardized test developed to measure skills and knowledge learned in a given year level, usually through planned instruction, such as training or classroom instruction.

High achievement scores usually indicate a mastery of grade-level material, and the readiness for advanced instruction. Low achievement scores can indicate the need for remediation or repeating a course grade.

In other applications, the achievement test serves as a tool to measure current knowledge levels for the purpose of placing students in an educational environment where they have the chance to advance at a pace that is suitable for their abilities.

The National Achievement Test (NAT) is an examination given annually in March to assess the competency of both public and private school students. The students' knowledge and skills are tested in the subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, Filipino, and HEKASI for grade school and Mathematics, English, Science, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan for high school. The test is administered by the Department of Education's National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC). The results are intended to guide the Department of Education in its efforts towards the improvement of the quality of education in public schools and to provide appropriate intervention for the students. A score of 75% and up indicates mastery of the subject and 50% to less than 75%, near mastery; while a score of below 50% indicates low mastery.

Llano High School as one of the public high schools in Caloocan City, obtained their National Achievement Test result in 2010 and showed the Mean Percentile Score (MPS) by subject areas as follows: Filipino 60.74, English 44.56, Science 41.74, Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies)-38.29, and Math-31.41. The school's average MPS is 43.35. If compared to other subjects, Araling Panlipunan and Math MPS were in the bottom. It is very important to determine the factors that affect students performance in order to improve their NAT ratings for the years to come.

However, there are instances that a student may perform well in the achievement test but shows undesirable performance in his class and vice versa. Achievement tests are exams that are designed to determine the degree of knowledge and proficiency exhibited by an individual in a specific area or set of areas. With this premise, this study attempts to determine the correlation between the national achievement performance in Social Studies and Mathematics and the academic performance of the students in the two subjects mentioned. Thus, the researcher aims that the results of this study be a basis of preparing or designing a guide for second year students.
