Abstract
Our definition of "reading in a foreign language" probably depends on our own previous language learning experiences. For example, if the teacher used the grammar translation method, reading probably figured prominently among the typical activities. As part of each lesson, the teacher probably assigned a number of lines or pages of text for you to prepare for the next class meeting. At home you would read laboriously through the text, conscientiously looking up all the words whose meanings you didn't know. In the next class meeting the teacher would call on the students one by one to read the assigned text aloud in the original language and then to translate the passage into English. The reading and translation might be followed by a discussion of some of the features of the text: noteworthy grammatical constructions, new vocabulary, stylistic nuances and the like. But as time goes by, this perception is getting narrow.
