Abstract
This research was conducted to determine the reading performance of grade six pupils in the Division of Caloocan City during the school year 2003- 2004, and developed and validated an integrated reading material for the use of the pupils and teachers.

The following are the specific problems raised in the study:

1. What is the performance level of Grade VI pupils as regards to reading comprehension?

2. Based on the identified weaknesses of the pupils, what instructional

materials may be developed?

3. How acceptable is the developed instructional material as assessed by

the school principals and reading teachers in terms of the following:

3.1 relevance;

3.2 contents;

3.3 mechanics and language; and

3.4 physical make-up?

4. Is there significant difference in the assessment of the two (2) groups of respondents on the aforecited variables?

5. What is the reading performance of the pupils using the developed

instructional material?

The descriptive-normative method of the investigation used the informal Reading Inventory test, researcher made questionnaire and pre and post test to gather the data to answer the sub problems of the study.

Two groups of respondents were involved in the study composed of 21 school principals and 105 sampled reading teachers from the 21 schools in the Division of Caloocan City. Two hundred twenty (220) grade six pupils from 7

sections in three selected schools in the division were also utilized in the use of the integrated reading material. These pupils were identified under the frustration level as revealed in the IRI test.
