Abstract
The study aimed to determine the degree of compliance to food safety standards of selected canteens in District II, Division of City Schools, Caloocan. The study was conducted during the school year 2018-2019.
Respondents of the study were forty (40) food handlers, forty (40) teachers, and forty (40) students from eight selected school canteens in the public elementary and high schools; and one (1) division office personnel respondent chosen at random was also involved in this study.
The data were consolidated, treated and analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
Findings showed that the food handler respondents of the eight selected school canteens were relatively mature to take responsibility in proper handling of food. Majority of the food handlers were female, married, and high school graduate. Also, most of the food handlers attended trainings/seminars on food safety.
The result of the study revealed that all eight selected school canteens possess yearly sanitary permits and health certificates from the local Health Department, renewed every year, and displayed in a visible place in the school canteen. It showed that they had fully complied with all the needed specific requirements in managing food safety.
The research study revealed that there were different perceptions of food handlers, teachers, students, and the division office personnel on the compliance of selected school canteens to food safety standards as to hygiene practices requirements, sanitary facilities requirements, school canteen area requirements, kitchen utensils requirements, and quality and protection of food requirements. It showed that food handlers were fully complied because they followed all the requirements as imposed by the Department of Education (DepEd), the schools division office, and the school. Among teachers and students, they observed that food handlers were compliant with all the requirements since they were not fully contented on their compliance to food safety standards. Also, the division office personnel perceived that food handers were moderately compliant since he was still looking for more improvements. Thus, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that there was a significant difference between the perceptions of food handlers, teachers, and students on the compliance of school canteens to food safety standards, Hence, the null hypothesis was rejected.
