Abstract
The purpose of the study is to determine the Teachers' Roles in the
Classroom and the Academic Performance of the Learners as Basis for Facufty
Development Program. The respondents of the study were the teachers from
each department from grade 9 level, in Tala High School and Camarin High
School, Caloocan City.
With the diverse population of students, changes in cultural behavior,
social and emotional pressure had in their lives; the classroom environment
became chaotic and disorderly. Teachers were in need of an effective
classroom plan in performing the roles as facilitator, loco parentis and manager
that would help bring order and productive learning back into the classroom.
In terms of student achievement, the teacher is a significant influence.
Teacher's roles in the classrOom such as facilitator, loco parentis, and classroom manager play an important part in the academic performance of the
students. Performing these roles can either encourage a student to be a
successful learner or the student's desire to learn. They have a great influence
on the young to become productive members of the society in their adult life.
Teachers' role is not just to teach the students with their lesson academically
but to teach them the lessons in life for the child to become a better person.
Under the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers , Article VIll, THE
TEACHERS AND THE LEARNERS of section 2, emphasized that a teacher
shall recognize that the interest and welfare of the learners are of first and
foremost concerns, and shall deal justifiably and impartially with each of them
and in section 9 states that a teacher shall ensure that conditions contribute to
the maximum development of learners are adequate, and shall extend needed
assistance in preventing or solving learner's problems and difficulties.
It is stated in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers Article Ill that
teacher is a facilitator of learning and the development of the youth; that he
shall. therefore render the best service by providing an environment conducive
to such learning and growth.
In place of the parents, teachers' roles and responsibility as stated in
Family Code of the Philippines, Executive Order No. 209, Article 218 that the
school, its administrators and teachers r the individual, entity or institution engaged in child shall have special parental authority and responsibility over
the minor child while under their supervision, instruction or custody.
(McBer, 2010) teacher as a manager can create environments, which
provide opportunities to learn and change in behavior, in which learners are
well- managed and motivated for learning.
The Methodology used in this study is to solicit views of grade 9 teachers,
a quantitative and qualitative approach where the data were gathered through
survey questionnaires and interviews.
Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the researcher
recommends: 1) The students should avoid absenteeism and tardiness in coming
to school so that the teachers will be able to perform their roles to achieve the
best outcomes of learning; 2) The teachers should engage themselves in the
different trainings and seminars conducted not only in the school but also in
higher levels. They should also increase their continuing professional
development so that they may be able to maximize their commitment on the roles
given to them in the classroom; and 3) The School administrators as the authority
should provide seminars and trainings that will enhance the capacity of the
teachers to perform well their given task and responsibilities as facilitator, loco
parentis and manager in nurturing the young ones.
