Abstract
This was a small-scale study of an exploration of reading habit of high
school teachers and learners. Forty teachers from different level handling
different subjects and sixty grade ten students from Pangarap High School
participated in this study. Data were collected through survey questionnaire
and in-depth guided questions. The result of the study showed that reading is
a a bit developed habit of the high school teachers of Pangarap High School
and grade ten students as well because they read but not really engaged with
it. Based on the result, students read only occasionally as the need arises.
They occasionally read on the library. Most of the time they only use notebooks
textbook in reading. They sometimes prefer reading electronic materials than
print materials. That the features of the book like thickness, font size.

illustrations etc affects their preferences for reading it or not. While the high
school teachers involved in this study admitted that reading is inevitable in their
professional and personal lives; yet, it is overlooked and sometimes taken
granted because of lack of time due to heavy loads, busy schedules, too much
work at school and home, that sometimes they do not have time for reading
and feel lazy doing it. While learners are too busy with gadget playing online
games, too much exposed to social media rather than spending time on
reading. The common trend among the research participants was that they
read by different push factors such as, preparation of the regular classroom
sessions of the disciplines they teach, newspapers, and some websites.
Textbooks of their respective disciplines are exceptionally frequently read for
teaching. Of the non-academic reading materials, many teachers were fond of
novels, non fiction books, magazines and newspapers for recreation and
relation. While students were fond of reading their notebooks and textbook for
education purposes, they also read online like watt pad stories, newspaper,
magazine, fiction and non fiction books for relaxation and for improvement of
their oral and written skills. The result showed that the reading habits of the
respondents are bit developed because they do not do it regularly. Based on
the result both respondents read one to two hours but not everyday. If they
only have time or if they only need to read. Although teachers are responsible

to lead the society by accessing and exposing culture, knowledge and values
for development and change through reading, the reality would highly weaken
them to play this part of their role. Hence, the researcher recommends for
stakeholders to conduct this research at a large-scale level including the
causes to contribute for the improvement of these habits to help teachers and
students to survive as scholars and leaders of the country.
Reading is essential for personal growth and social and economic
success. It was the most important subject in American early schools, and
explained that reading continues to be the most significant subject in schools
throughout the world. And I strongly agree with it Educators need to consider
ways to strengthen our educational system beginning with teachers'
preparation. So that we can be a good example to the young generations
especially to our students, so that we can impose to them, we have to teach
our students to practice reading, do reading and love reading because it is
worth doing so.
