Abstract
Academic achievement of students especially at the elementary school level is not only a pointer to the effectiveness or otherwise of schools but also a major determinant of the future of the youth in particular and the nation in general. Economic and social development of a country is directly associated with academic performance of students. In research studies, various factors have been investigated. Raychaudhuri et. al. (2010) concluded that students' academic performance depends on various socio-economic factors like students' attendance, family income, parental educational level, teacher-student ratio, professionally trained teaching staff, sex of the student, and distance of schools. The academic performance of the students' has gained significant attention in past researches. Performance of students is affected by psychological,economic, social personal, and environmental factors. Though these factors strongly influence the performance of the students, but this factor differ form country to country and person to person

This study aims to find out the relative contribution of socio economic factors to the academic performance of selected Grade Three pupils in selected schools in Caloocan North District. Purposely this study answered the following questions: (1)What is the socio economic profile of the pupils family in terms of home location, parents' occupation, family income, size of the family, house ownership and parents' educational attainment (2) What is the academic performance of the pupils based on the 3rd Grading General Weighted Average (GWA)?: (3) Is there a significant relationship in the academic performance of the pupils when grouped according to their socio economic profile?; (4)What school-based parenting seminar activity program maybe developed based on the findings of the study? The study employed, descriptive-correlational method. Descriptive studies describe a given state of affairs as fully carefully as possible. Correlational research design involves studying relationship among variables within a single group and frequently suggests the possibility of cause and effect. The survey checklist is the main data-gathering instrument that was used in this study which aimed to gather information needed in the study. The researcher employed a checklist to elicit the needed data on matters that connects to socio economic profile of the pupils to their academic performance, as well as other essential under takings which the scope of the study covered. The respondents of the study were 150 parents of grade three pupils in selected schools in Caloocan North I District namely Caloocan North Elementary School, Camarin D Elementary School and Camarin D Elementary School Unit II. The data gathered from the retrieved survey checklist were organized. tallied, tabulated, presented in tables, analyzed and interpreted through the used of frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean and chi square correlation The result of the study revealed that the null hypothesis that there is significant relationship in the academic performance of the pupils, when grouped according to their socio-economic profile except for the variable home location wherein the computed value in the test were higher than the critical value was accepted and it was interpreted as not significant.
It was also found out that majority of the respondents live in slum area, but performance of the pupils was not affected by the location where the pupil is dwelling. In terms of parents' occupation, most of the parents have blue collar job though of the parents are college graduate. For the family average monthly income, most of the respondents are minimum wage eamers. It implied that family income of students could affect their learning process, motivation and academic performance at the long-run. Thus, strong financial status of families helps improve students' motivation, learning process and hence better academic performance. For the house ownership, majority of the respondents are renting. With regards to family size, majority of the respondents have small family. It revealed that parents level of formal education, parents' occupation, parents' income level, and family size have potent influences on children's propensity to maximize their gains from education. in the light of the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations were made: (1)Learners with low family income should not make it as an excuse for low academic performance. For parents, they must be totally responsible for their child's education. Despite their economic status, they ought to encourage their children to attain high academic performance to have a better future. It is their great responsibility to help their children in school For teachers, they must understand and have a heart for this students whose education is being ignored by their parent, (2)Teachers should identify and focus on pupils with low academic performance. They should give activities that is suited to the level of the pupils or always give differentiated activities that will cater the diverse level of their pupils. Give assignments or projects that are not costly or that only need recycled materials. Have remediation, Parents should actively support the leaming of their children, in such ways as monitoring children's progress and communicating with school personnel, tutor children at home to reinforce work done in school and acting as volunteer in schools as aides or in other roles; (3)Parents should pay more than the usual attention to their involvement in their children's academic work. They should give more attention to their children's academic progress by monitoring their activities in and out of school, ensuring that home work is done, providing necessary educational materials and partnering with their teachers to guide and assist their children to maximize their gains from schooling. Parents should utilize the advantage of having a small family to enhance pupils' learning by spending time with talking educational word. They should be 100% involved in their children's progress. Despite the economic status of parents, parents must be totally responsible for their child's education; supporting them both financially and non-financially. Low income status of the families must not demotivate or demoralize students and rub them of their endowed academic potentials and excellence. (4)Plan a school-based parenting seminar/ activities/ program that will help progress the academic performance of Grade Three pupils.
