Abstract
The ability to live one's life does not depend on intelligence alone but upon the structure and functioning of the whole personality including the attitude the learner has toward life, toward school, and toward the extent to which his basic emotional, social, and academic needs have been satisfied. How a learner takes his or her studies greatly determines his or her level of academic achievements. The level of preparation and learning strategies developed and engaged consciously by learners, go a long way to influence their academic performance.
The results of this study serve as a frame of reference for school administrators in initiating in-service training programs to upgrade the quality of instruction in TLE. This study will help the TLE teachers in their sincere effort to develop desirable traits, behavior and work skills among their students. It could reveal some strengths and weaknesses in their teaching, as well as in their strategies and methodologies in consonance with attaining quality education. The findings of this study will also help the students in their quest for knowledge and acquisition of skills needed in the industry and other occupations. This would also give them insights of the skills they have developed in TLE which ought to be practiced by them through application in their home and community life.
The researcher made used of descriptive method of research with one hundred eighteen (118) student-respondents from three different sections. The researcher deemed to give answers to the following problems: 1. What is the performance of the learners in the achievement test for the first semester, SY 2018-2019?; 2. What is the performance of the learners in the practical exam during the first semester, SY 2018-2019? ; 3. Is there a significant relationship in the results of the learners' achievement test and practical examination?; 4. What are the least mastered skills of TLE 10 learners based on the results of the achievement test and practical examination? 5.and What are the comments and suggestions of teachers on the teaching exemplars ?;
Mean percentage and standard deviation were utilized in S.O.P. number 1 and 2. For S.O.P. number 3, t-test was performed to determine its significant difference. For S.O.P. number 4, a qualitative approach is used and for S.O.P. number 5, a simple interview was administered.
The results of the data revealed that the performance of the learners in achievement test with an overall mean of 36. 35 and standard deviation of 6.51 was 72 percent proficiency level and interpreted with nearing mastery on lessons discussed, and the performance of the learners in practical examination with an overall mean of 40.12 and standard deviation of 3.49 was above 75 percent proficiency level which was found to be with mastery on concepts and lessons discussed. The data showed that there was a significant difference in the results of the learners' achievement test and practical examination, since the computed t-value of 10.09 was greater than the critical value of 1.645, thus the null hypothesis was rejected.
Based on the finding of the study, the researcher came up with the following least mastered skills. The identified least mastered skills were reading difficulties the language of cooking, measuring and following recipes, the researcher strongly recommends for the learners with reading difficulties, instructions given should be simplified or if necessary, translated in Filipino or mother tongue language / dialect. Passion for cooking, while it may not seem all that intuitive at first, cooking is indeed an art much like music, painting or dance. While there is also a hefty dose of science (bread making anyone?) the artistic nature of preparing a creative and unique meal certain requires a hefty dose of passion for the culinary. If you love all aspects of food from creation to consumption, you'll do just fine on this checklist item.
Attentiveness to detail Despite what a certain whirling dervish of a cartoon character may have taught us about kitchen skills in our youth, food preparation requires a great deal of precision. Even the smallest details can create differences in taste. A pinch too much sugar or salt can threaten the taste buds and the success of an entire dish. If you've got an above average attention to detail it will serve you well working with food.
Based on the data under cognitive aspect the respondents suggested that in giving instructions in exams, module and even the procedures in cooking, must be precise, well-organized and appropriate to the learner's level of understanding. Another teaching exemplar to be utilized is the portfolio assessment. Assessment is a gut-wrenching task that teachers have to perform. Moreover, teacher-respondents commented and suggested that portfolio assessment must be authentic, specific and required tangible products for a better evaluation.
In view of these, the following conclusions and recommendations are given:
1. The students must be engaged in the use of different teaching exemplars developed in this study so that a more positive outcome will be determined to elevate their performance in both cognitive and psychomotor intelligences.
2. The teachers in T.L.E 10 must collaborate with other teachers in the T.L.E. subject, teaching cookery so that a higher proficiency level in the mastery of the lesson will be achieved by the learners.
3. The teachers not only in cookery but in other learning areas must partake in developing more effective teaching exemplars for the best outcomes of learning, specifically for learners with difficulty.
4. The school administrators must provide a better environment of learning such as cooking laboratories and pantries which can fully develop the skill of the learners in terms of cognitive and psychomotor.
5. The school head/principal must provide school-based seminars and trainings that will allow the teachers to enhance their creativity and innovativeness in developing effective and efficient teaching exemplars.
6. The support of the parents and other stakeholders must be solicited towards the school activities especially in the cookery subject so that there will more sophisticated materials and tools to be utilized in the subject
