Abstract
This study aimed to improve the performance in Araling Panlipunan through contextualized motivational activities among Grade 8 students in Caybiga High School. Student motivation has been a long concern of Araling Panlipunan educators. Learner's lack of engagement and motivation often results to low performance. Motivation is an inner drive that causes the learner to do something and persevere in something. It is the force that energizes a learner to do what she/he is expected to do. A learner's level of motivation is reflected in his choice of action. A highly motivated learner accomplishes and performs well in contrast to unmotivated or poorly motivated one who seems not to have any desire to accomplish things or perform well. Contextualized motivation offers a means for understanding the complexities of student motivations in Araling Panlipunan learning. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design in this study. According to Howard White and Shagun Shabarwal (2014) a quasi-experiment is an empirical study used to estimate the causal impact of an intervention on its target population without random assignment. Quasi-experimental research shares similarities with the traditional experimental design or randomized controlled trial, but they specifically lack the element of random assignment to treatment or control. Quasi-experimental designs typically allow the researcher to control the assignment to the treatment condition, but using some criterion other than random assignment. In some cases, the researcher may have control over assignment to treatment. The first part of creating a quasi-experimental design is to identify the variables. Once the variables have been identified and defined, a procedure should then be implemented and group differences should be examined. In this study the x variable is the Grade 8 students and the y variable is the contextualized motivational activities. The topics in Araling Panlipunan that can be subject for localized motivational activities as revealed, the highest rank is "Rebolusyong Industriyal" with a frequency of 5 and the lowest are "Paglakas ng Europe", "Rebolusyong Pranses" and "Napoleonic Wars" which gained 1. This implies that there is a need for contextualization of motivational activities on the topics for "Rebolusyong Industryal". The topics in Araling Panlipunan that may be given contextualized and localized motivational activities: Rebolusyong Industryal is a topic in Araling Panlipunan with a highest frequency which needed contextualized motivational activities. Teachers must contextualize motivational activities on the top 3 topics in Araling Panlipunan during the third quarter. Teachers must also explore other contextualized motivational activities for other topics to increase performance. Teachers should perform better in the motivational activities to maximize learning performance. Teachers must address behavioral problems of the students and prepare modules for the students to learn. Use the findings as an input for the Learning Action Cell Seminar (LAC) of Araling Panlipunan teachers. The findings may use for the development of school administration, school principal, and department heads and master teachers.
